“I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.”
All disciples have asked the question, “Where is God in my circumstances?” or wondered, “How do I find God in the middle of this?” The disciples were already overwhelmed and fearful. Jesus knew that the disciples could not handle any more at that time, which is why the Holy Spirit would be their Guide; He would teach them and reveal to them God’s purpose and plan.
The Holy Spirit is God; He is one of the three Persons of the Trinity. Only in His guidance can we can live out a life that glorifies the Father and the Son. We connect with the Spirit’s guidance in three ways.
First, He guides us through the study of Scripture, where He reveals the truths of God to us. The Spirit never leads contrary to Scripture. Second, the Holy Spirit uses our prayers to guide us as He assures us of the promises of God. Finally, the Spirit speaks through fellow believers who have wisdom from years of walking with Him. Each of these is available to us as followers of Jesus; we just need to take hold of them. The Holy Spirit is with us and will guide us through all of life’s challenges.
- Why is it important that the Holy Spirit guides us?
- What tools does the Holy Spirit use to guide us? How do we tap into His guidance?
- Thank the Holy Spirit for being our guide.
