Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been declared to you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.
As we have trekked through Isaiah 40, a reoccurring theme is the incomparable greatness of God. The great hymn, Holy, Holy, Holy tells us that God is perfect in power, love, and purity. On full display here is God’s incredible power.
News about God's power is not new. It has been available since the earth was founded. Even the most powerful people are grasshoppers when viewed from God's heavenly throne. No other power exists like this, and it is evident to all who open their eyes. Not only has God’s power been understood from the foundations of the earth, but also the foundations of the earth reveal God’s power.
Look at the mountains, a sudden downpour, hail, powerful winds, rainstorms, or lightning. These are not random events created by a natural phenomenon. From the beginning, God is the source behind all of it. He governs the processes. They ultimately belong to Him. When we see the world around us, evidence of God’s power is readily available. The question, “Have you not understood?” implies that we can look and find understanding. God is the great and mighty Creator, and all things find their life and being in Him. He sees all of human and natural history with perfect clarity and intricate detail. Stand in wonder of your God today.
