Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

Warning signs are utilized for good reason.

They serve to protect, inform, caution, and guide from harm. A bottle of poison without a label or a missing sign to let you know a bridge has collapsed would pose a significant risk. Upon receiving a warning of danger, it is reckless to ignore the warning. The Bible contains serious warnings about the devil, and we would be wise to pay attention to them.

How are we to proceed with the knowledge that Satan is on the prowl?

Peter encouraged his readers—and us—to be sober-minded and alert. We are of sober mind when we are steeped in the truth about God. We know this truth through God’s revelation in the Bible. In accordance with the truth of the Bible, we stay alert through continual prayer, seeking guidance from the Spirit to defend against the attacks of the enemy.

Through diligent guard against the attacks of Satan, we not only benefit ourselves, but also others in the body of Christ around us.

• How have you experienced the attacks of Satan both in times of alertness and in times of inattentiveness?
• How does staying alert benefit others in the body of Christ around you?
• Pray for protection for yourself, your family, and your church against the enemy’s attacks.
