Is counseling even biblical? I've heard some people say that people who go to counseling "just don't have enough faith."

The Bible says, "A wise man will hear and increase in learning, and a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel (Proverbs 1:5)." Throughout the Bible there are many examples of men and women seeking guidance and counsel from other believers.

What kind of counseling will I receive at 121 Counseling Center?

The counseling at 121 Counseling Center is based on what is known as an "integrated approach." Counselors using this model acknowledge the Bible as the ultimate authority and guide. They also recognize that all truth, whether a Christian or an atheist teaches it, is God's truth. One's personal religious beliefs in no way supersede God's ability to use someone's work (in this case psychological) for His benefit. Thus a counselor working from an integrated position will incorporate various psychological theories in the counseling he does knowing that they can be used to do God's work - helping heal those who are hurting.

Will what I talk about be kept confidential?

By law, counselors in the state of Texas are required to maintain their client's confidentiality at all times with three limited exceptions:

  1. If the counselor deems you are in danger to yourself or others.
  2. If the counselor is made aware of child or elder abuse, or the likelihood of that abuse occurring.
  3. If the counselor is subpoenaed by the courts.

These are the only reasons confidentiality may be broken without your permission.

Will the pastor or other staff members know what I talked about?

No.

What is the cost?

121 Counseling Center offers counseling on a sliding-fee scale based on a family's gross income. The current fee structure is as follows:

Gross Annual Income:                Fee per Session:

$100,000+                                 $100.00
$90,000-$99,999                        $90.00
$80,000-$89,999                        $85.00
$70,000-$79,999                        $80.00
$60,000-$69,999                        $75.00
$50,000-$59,999                        $65.00
$40,000-$49,999                        $55.00
$35,000-$39,999                        $45.00
$30,000-$34,999                        $40.00
$29,999 and less                       $35.00

Will my insurance pay for it?

Maybe. If your insurance company allows you to seek mental health benefits out of network, then there is a good chance they will reimburse you whatever percentage of "normal and customary charges" they have agreed to cover. If you are part of an HMO, they will not pay for counseling through 121, as we have chosen not to be a provider for any insurance company. However, if your company has a flexible spending account you can contribute to pre-tax, you can submit your receipt for counseling as a reimbursable medical expense. There will be a $20 fee assessed to your account each time we are required by your insurance company to complete paperwork on your behalf.

Will you file my insurance for me?

No. However, we will provide you with a receipt for services that should suffice for you to file your own claim.

How many sessions will it take to cure my particular problem?

Unfortunately, this is a question that cannot be simply answered. Many clients are able to meet once a week for 6-12 weeks and that is sufficient. Others are meeting once a week for 6-12 months or more depending on the severity of their issue. During our first meeting, we will discuss with you a treatment plan that gives an estimate of how many sessions you will require.

Can I choose between a male or female counselor?

Currently, Greg Wells is the only counselor on staff for the Counseling Center. While Greg has experience working with women and many of the issues unique to them, he understands that some women simply will not feel comfortable meeting with a male counselor. If that is the case, please contact the Counseling Center and we will gladly refer you to several competent female Christian counselors in the area.

Why choose a Christian counselor over one who is not?

The point-of-view of a Christian counselor is quite likely to be different than that of a secular counselor. Many secular counselors view religion with skepticism at best; often they view it with disdain. At 121 Counseling Center, we understand that apart from Christ, true healing can never occur. For that reason, we are always mindful of where a client is spiritually and how that will impact their current situation, and we are always seeking to integrate God's truth into all that we say and do.

Do you prescribe medication?

No. Under Texas state law, counselors are not allowed to prescribe medication. With that said, we understand that medication is sometimes a necessity and will gladly refer you to a psychiatrist for evaluation if desired.
