But a time is coming, and even now has arrived, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers.
It’s not just about what you do, it’s how you do it. We apply this idea in different areas of life to remind ourselves that the tasks we do are not just a means to an end. The way we go about the things we do matters—it tells people a lot about what we value and believe. When Jesus spoke to the woman at the well about worship, He gave guidance not only to worship but also how to worship God. If we have been in church for some time, we likely know that it is important to worship God and the commandment to not to put other gods before Him, but we need the reminder that the “how” matters. We are called to worship God in spirit and in truth. This is a daily calling that impacts the way we live. We live dependent on the Holy Spirit to move and change our hearts and to use the truth in God’s Word to guide us in how we live and serve Him.
Take some time today to assess the way in which you usually approach God. Are you bringing your whole self before Him? This doesn’t mean we don’t have any distractions or concerns. It means we bring these with us, laying them before Him and worshiping Him as the one true God over all things.
- What are some things that distract you from your relationship with God or threaten to divide your heart and mind in worship?
- How is worshiping God a part of your everyday life?
- Pray against the things that divide your worship of God.
