For those who are in accord with the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are in accord with the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.

By the time we become adults, many things have changed about us since we were children: our tastes, our preferences, and our hobbies. As we learn, grow, and develop over time, our lens for life has changed from the eyes of a child to the perspective of an adult. This natural earthly change gives a small peak into to the change that should happen in the life of a person who has surrendered to Christ and become a Christian. But the changes that take place in our lives when we follow Christ go beyond the surface and cut straight to our hearts and very being. Before Christ, we have our minds fixed on the flesh and things that satisfy our selfish desires in life. When we receive the Spirit of God, we become focused on things that are important to God and the spiritual realities we couldn’t previously see.

Even after becoming Christians, we must seek to keep this focus rather than going back to our old way of thinking. What we focus on matters because it reveals our motivations, and it affects what we do and who we become. When our focus is on God and living for Him, we will look to worship Him in all we do. When we focus on things of the flesh, we create idols we believe will give us what we want out of life. Where have you set your mind and your focus?

  • Where would you say your focus is most often? What does this indicate about what is your greatest priority?
  • How can you remind yourself to seek the things of the Spirit?
  • Pray and ask God to remind you of your identity in Him so that you focus on things of the Spirit.
