“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.”
When was the last time you heard someone accused of “bluffing”? We use this term to mean there is no truth behind the words someone says. A person may say they have a good hand in cards when they don’t, or they may say that they are no good at a game but have great skill. Their claim is strong, but their words are empty. There are also moments where people speak falsely about something more serious. Maybe someone lied to your face about something or pretended to be a certain type of person, but their actions did not line up with their claims. The pain of dishonest words and actions makes an impact beyond the moment.
If our empty words have the potential to affect people around us, consider how much deeper empty words affect our relationship with God. When we make a claim to know Him but have no fruit behind our claim, we take His name in vain. When we say God told us to do something but we never sought Him in prayer, we make a serious claim with empty words behind it. Taking God’s name in vain is a serious offense to God with serious consequences because we were made to do the opposite. We were made to give Him glory. This may not seem so serious in the middle of the conversation, when we are trying to get the approval of man, but it has serious implications in our lives. When we take God’s name in vain, we live for ourselves, but when we honor the name of God, we remind ourselves of our design as people made in the image of God to bring glory to Him.
- When have you made a claim about your relationship with God to impress others?
- How can we speak God’s name in a way that is not in vain?
- Pray and ask God to grow your relationship with Him from the things you do to the words you say.
