“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.”
What does a regular weekday look like for you? You likely have a list of rhythms and routines each day, such as the drive to work or making dinner for your family. Throughout the week our days often look similar because of the daily tasks in our offices or homes. For many, the weekend is a special time because it deviates from the routine; it allows a break from the daily rhythms and an opportunity to rest, travel, or spend time with people we love. But it’s easy to let the busyness of the week spill over into the weekend with extra job responsibilities or other commitments. Before long, we may forget when we last had a break at all.
The word holy means “set apart.” God gave the Sabbath, a day of rest, to be set apart, not just as a good rule of thumb but as a rhythm we were made for. As believers under the New Covenant, we are not held to God’s laws in the same way as Israel, but these laws often operate as a kind guidance for the way He designed us. For us, Sabbath is a reminder that we need rest. Like children fighting a nap, we often want to resist this need and push through to get work done or take advantage of every opportunity to be purposeful, but we cannot escape this design God put into our DNA. We need regular time set apart to be with Him.
- Do you have a regular rhythm of rest? What does that look like?
- How does this type of regular rest require trust in God?
- Pray and thank God for His design for rest.
