And He was saying to them, “Take care what you listen to. By your standard of measure it will be measured to you; and more will be given you besides. For whoever has, to him more will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.”

When you pack for a trip, you pack according to the climate of your destination. If you visit somewhere tropical, you won’t pack a winter coat. If you travel somewhere for a short time, you probably won’t bring your whole wardrobe. Your suitcase is limited fit the essentials for the trip, so it doesn’t make much sense to pack things that will not coordinate with your itinerary.

In life, we don’t always consider our destination in the day to day. It is easy to only do what sounds good or convenient at the time. Sometimes we pursue temporary things like wealth, status, or fame. But in this passage, Jesus calls us to consider where we’re headed. We are created in the image of God, designed to live with Him. When we have received Christ as our Lord and Savior, our destination is eternity with Him.

We need to be intentional about the things we consume, invest in, and pursue in this life. Only the things of Christ will truly prepare us for our eternal home. We must pay attention to what we listen to, whether it’s advice from a friend, music, a podcast, or even a TV show. We need to consider what is important to us, too. What’s most important? Is it the hope we have in Christ, or the temporary pleasures of world?

May we heed to the wisdom Jesus gave in Matthew 6:19-21 that says, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

  • What are you consuming, investing in, or pursuing right now? Are those things reflecting your relationship with Christ? Explain.
  • What are some ways we store up treasures in heaven?
  • Pray and ask God to help you prioritize your life based on the eternal hope you have in Him.
