“Have you not even read this Scripture: ‘A stone which the builders rejected, this has become the chief cornerstone; this came about from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”
God has never been surprised by the brokenness of humanity as we often are. He knows the ugliness of humanity and still redeems us. He sees all our sin and still pursues us. Even as the Pharisees rejected Him, He was not surprised. He does not work as we do; He always sees the whole picture and knows exactly what He is doing.
Jesus quoted this Scripture to the Pharisees to remind them that God’s promise was being fulfilled even through their rejection of Him. Their pursuit to kill Jesus was not surprising to God. Even in their rejection of God, they could not escape His sovereignty. It is encouraging to know our broken pieces never surprise God and can be redeemed by Him. God has given the cornerstone we need for our lives.
May we live as Paul says in Ephesians 2:20-22: “having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.” Today, we can choose to reject Jesus or recognize Him as the chief cornerstone. Only He can bring meaning and fulfillment to our lives. Only He can redeem the broken pieces to make them beautiful.
- What does it look like to live recognizing Jesus as the cornerstone of your life? How is that different from the way you live now?
- How are you encouraged that God is not surprised by the brokenness in the world? How can that change the way you approach Him when difficult things happen?
- Pray and thank God for redeeming you. Ask Him to be your chief cornerstone.
