But He said to him, “A man was giving a big dinner, and he invited many; and at the dinner hour he sent his slave to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, because everything is ready now.’”
Any large gathering requires a good amount of prep. The location must be prepared, the food cooked, the tables set, and the invitations sent out. Large-scale gatherings are often reserved for special occasions for that very reason. From the outset of this parable, we can see that the host had gone to great lengths to prepare for His many guests. This wasn’t a last minute, haphazard gathering. He had a long guest list. God’s preparation for those who will feast in His kingdom is also extensive. He has been writing this narrative of redemption from the beginning of time to bring His creation back to fellowship with Him as we were designed to be. God’s invitation to us, which we share with others, has required great cost. But God has paid the price and many to believe and take part in His kingdom.
Remembering the lengths God has gone to have a relationship with us should change the way we approach our relationship with Him. Instead of giving minimal time and attention, we eagerly receive and accept His invitation. This right perspective leads to excitement to share with other and invite them in also.
- What are some ways God has prepared a place for you? What cost has He paid to have a relationship with you?
- What is challenging about extending the invitation of the gospel to others? How does knowing the value of the gospel change the way you share it?
- Pray and ask God to give you boldness to extend His gospel invitation to others.
