“But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers that are in the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. And then He will send forth the angels, and will gather together His elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of heaven.”
In turbulent times, we may say, “I feel like my world is falling apart.” Even though the world is still turning, the sun is still shining, and the earth around us hasn’t changed at all, our view of life has been shaken and shifted. It can feel even more troubling to think about a time when the world will cease as we know it. But in this frightening scene described as the world falling apart, we have hope. There is One more constant than the sun that shines. There is One that will outlive all the stars. He is the Word who has been there from the beginning (John 1:1), and He will be there through the earth’s end.
Our God is constant. He reigns over all things and holds all things together. Whether our world feels like it is metaphorically shaking when hardship strikes or it literally shakes under our feet, God is still Ruler over all.
Our challenge is to hold on to Jesus each day just as we would as if everything was falling apart. Instead of putting our hope in things that will not last, we can put our hope in He who is constant and true. He is with us and in control, even to the end of the age.
- When have you felt like the world was falling apart? Where did you put your hope?
- Why are we prone to drift when life is easy and comfortable? How can we guard against this?
- Pray and thank God for always being constant and sovereign.
