“David divided them into divisions according to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.” 1 Chronicles 23:6
Sports teams include a variety of positions. Some of those positions are very noticeable and are often included in making the big plays and scoring points for the team. Others work in a way you don’t often notice. Even though some positions get less attention for the work they do, their work for the team is still extremely important. When David divided Israel, it wasn’t to build one group up as the best or give them a higher position; rather, it was to help each group play their part in serving God together.
When you serve the Lord, it may not always be with the group that does the most noticeable work or that gets the most attention, but everyone has a part to play. Each group in Israel shared the vision and goal to worship God and follow Him. We still share this goal today. Our gifts don’t have to tear us apart; they don’t even have to pull us in different directions. Through Christ, we can each play our part in seeking growth in knowing God and sharing His hope with others. Romans 12:4-5 says, “For just as we have many parts in one body and all the body’s parts do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually parts of one another.”
- What are some areas you serve in? How have you grown from your time serving in this way?
- What are some groups your friends or family serve in at your church? How do they serve differently from you? How does that help glorify God together?
- Pray and thank God for the different ways people serve in your church and ask Him to unite you all in Him.
