“In unison when the trumpeters and the singers were to make themselves heard with one voice to praise and to glorify the Lord, and when they raised their voices accompanied by trumpets, cymbals, and other musical instruments, and when they praised the Lord saying, “He indeed is good for His kindness is everlasting,” then the house, the house of the Lord, was filled with a cloud, so that the priests could not rise to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the house of God.” 2 Chronicles 5:13-14

When was the last time a song got stuck in your head? Music has a way of sticking with us long past the moment we hear it. The messages and tune resound in our ears even when it is completely silent around us. This passage reminds us that worship is more than good music being played; it’s the heart behind the music. The musicians came together with one voice to praise and glorify God. Their music was not for applause or for others to notice but to glorify God.

This passage reminds us of the beauty of worshiping God. Worship is not primarily about our exterior actions but the posture of our hearts. When our hearts are tuned toward God, the outcome is worship in everything. When our hearts are tuned toward apathy, indifference, or amplifying our own names, it doesn’t matter how good things appear or sound on the outside. This challenges each of us to slow down and check our hearts when we enter worship, submitting before God, who hears our praise.

  • What is your typical attitude when you enter a worship service? What would it look like to come in with a heart ready to worship like in this passage?
  • What was the result from the people’s readiness to worship God in this passage?
  • Pray and be honest with God about the times it has been hard to worship Him with all your heart and ask for renewed passion for Him.
