“Moses told his father-in-law everything that the Lord had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, all the hardship that had confronted them on the journey, and how the Lord had rescued them. And Jethro rejoiced over all the goodness which the Lord had done for Israel, in rescuing them from the hand of the Egyptians. So Jethro said, ‘Blessed be the Lord who rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of Pharaoh, and who rescued the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. Now I know that the Lord is greater than all the gods; indeed, it was proven when they acted insolently against the people.'” Exodus 18:8-11
People can tell a story from a variety of angles. They can include themselves as the main character; they can share with emotion, making it clear how they feel about what happened; or they can tell the story with critique, dissecting what happened and giving their thoughts at every point. As Moses shared all that had happened with Israel, he framed the story in a very intentional way. Instead of framing the events as matter of fact or things he had accomplished, Moses shared “everything that the Lord had done” (v. 8). He intentionally framed the events in light of God’s work and faithfulness. He shared not to lift himself up but to glorify God. In response, Jethro immediately praised God for the work He had done.
Today, we have the same opportunity to share in a way that points to God. We can share about God’s provision, give testimony to His faithfulness, and tell others about how He walks with us through the ups and downs of life. When we do this, we live out the call Jesus gave to his disciples before He ascended to heaven in Acts 1:8: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and Samaria, and as far as the remotest part of the earth.” When we share what God has done and what He is doing, we bear witness about Him to others. As we faithfully share the works of God with others, we invite them to know Him, too.
- Do you enjoy sharing stories? What are some of the common ways you share stories with others?
- When have you heard a story that emphasized how God was at work? What did you learn about God?
Pray and thank God for the way He is at work in our lives. Ask Him to help you bear witness to who He is before others.
