For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

At some point many of us consider the question, “What is my purpose?” Seeking the answer, we may look to our work to find meaning and achievement. We can look to our family, to our friends, or even out to the world to “find ourselves.” But the only way we truly find ourselves is through knowing the One who gave us purpose and knows our design completely. God gave us the gift of grace through Jesus so that we can be made new and live as He desires, not for ourselves, but as His workmanship. We are made to live with Him, walking alongside Him and serving others as He has.

He has drawn us near when we were far away, saved us when we couldn’t save ourselves, walked with us throughout life, and equips us to serve Him and others. What if this truth changed our outlook on life in the workplace? We would see our jobs not as a source of achievement but as an opportunity to serve and love others. What would happen if this truth changed our outlook about our family? We would view them as people to serve, witness to, or minister with instead of the source of our identity. What if this truth changed our outlook on the world? We do not have to go out to “find ourselves,” but can go out into the world and share the hope we have found in Jesus. You “are [God’s] workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand.” Let’s walk in them.

  • What have you viewed as your purpose in the past?
  • How does knowing your purpose change the way you live daily?
  • Pray and ask God how your purpose in Him needs to change your daily life.
