Summary: James 4:1-10
When we face conflict, it is easy to point the finger at other people, but this passage reminds us of a crucial aspect we often look over, sin in our own hearts. Instead of insisting on our own way, Scripture calls us to inspect the motivation in our own hearts and come to God with our struggles instead of trying to make our own solutions.
What does this say about God?
God is after heart change. He is about fixing the big problems around the world and the small problems in our hearts. When we come to Him in humility, He is faithful to forgive us and lift us up beyond anything we could accomplish on our own.

Discussion with Younger Kids
- When was the last time you had a disagreement with another person?
- Is it easier to talk about how someone else is wrong or about how you are wrong? Why? Why do you think God wants us to see where we are wrong too?
Discussion With Older Kids
- Think of a recent argument you were involved in. What happened? How did you contribute to the problem? Why is this hard to admit?
- What is easier: pointing out how someone else is wrong or admitting your own struggles? Why? Why does God want us to admit when we are wrong?
Discussion with Teens
- How do you typically respond to conflict? Why is it hard to avoid blaming others?
- Why is it easier to point out how someone else is wrong before considering our own sin? Why do you think it is important to God that we acknowledge our sin and come to Him to move forward? What are some ways we can seek to do that?
