“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21

What are some of the best investments you have made with your time? What felt like a waste of time? None of us go into a project hoping to waste our time, but it is not usually until the end of an endeavor that we have the perspective to see the result. Even so, we guard the things we treasure, whether temporary or eternal.

Making investments on earth can seem valuable but Jesus was clear: It will not last. The only lasting investments we make are eternal, living for His kingdom that will never spoil or fade. This is an investment we make in a variety of ways. We invest our time in sharing the hope of Christ with others, we invest our resources with the way we give and share what we have, and we invest in our money giving to those who are in need. In any season of life and with whatever resources you have, eternal investments are possible. When you treasure the things of Christ, it does not matter if you are staying at home with kids, taking classes, working in the office, or in a nursing home, you can live for God’s kingdom, keeping your eyes fixed on Him. He will guide our hearts and resources to the things that will be worth it in the end.

  • What does building up treasures on earth look like? How have you done that?
  • What does building up treasures in heaven look like? How have you done that?
  • Pray and ask God to help you keep your eyes fixed on Him and eternal things.
