This was the true Light that, coming into the world, enlightens every person. (John 1:9)

If you look around any room, it is not hard to see that we are all different. We have different features, different preferences or perspectives, the list can go on and on. We can also see that even though we have so many differences we share much in common: our humanity, our desire for purpose, our longing to be loved, and so forth. When the Messiah came, He did not come for people with certain preferences or from a particular background. He wasn’t just good for some people; His light enlightens every person. This is the great joy of Christmas. Our God knows us, as different as we are, and He has come to bring light to all of our lives as we receive Him.

In His goodness, through Christ, God grants His light to everyone who turns from their sin and trusts in Jesus. Jesus entered the world; He entered the mess not just of a few but of us all. Jesus as the true Light brings us joy because He has accomplished what we never could. No one else—no ministry, nonprofit, or organization—could not help every single person in the world to the completeness that Jesus does. He has given us the opportunity for complete healing and has guided us with His light on how to navigate this world.

  • Who are the people who seem like they are fine without Jesus? How can you share the joy of Christmas with them this year?
  • What is special about how Jesus entered into the mess of the world to give light to it? What are some messes you have wanted to take care of yourself instead of inviting Christ’s light into?
  • Pray and ask God to help you identify someone to share His light with.
