“Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, the Lord your God disciplines you. So you shall keep the commandments of the Lord your God by walking in his ways and by fearing him.” – Deuteronomy 8:5-6

We often misunderstand discipline, seeing it as punishment rather than the loving correction it truly is. Just as a gardener prunes a tree so it can bear more fruit, God disciplines us to align us with His will and help us grow in the direction He’s designed for us. The sermon this week reminded us of that bent persimmon tree that needed to be staked and pruned, not to harm it, but to help it flourish and bear fruit. Without that intervention, the tree would grow crooked and vulnerable to breaking in the first storm. God’s discipline works the same way in our lives.

Here’s the truth that changes everything: the Father who loves, disciplines. If you’re experiencing God’s correction in your life right now, it’s not a sign that He’s angry with you, it’s proof that you belong to Him. He’s taking ownership of you as His son or daughter, making sure you’re walking in the way that leads to life. Yes, all discipline feels unpleasant in the moment, but it produces righteousness and allows us to walk in the things God has prepared for us. Apart from Him, we can do nothing, so His loving discipline is actually redirecting us back to the only path where we can truly thrive.

Reflect:

  • How have you experienced God’s discipline in your life, and how did it ultimately draw you closer to Him?
  • Are there areas where you’re resisting God’s correction instead of receiving it as an expression of His love?
  • Thank God for loving you enough to discipline you, and ask Him to give you a soft heart that receives His correction with humility and trust.
