“Even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life. This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” – John 17:2-3
Eternal life isn’t just about living forever, it’s about knowing God personally, intimately, right now. Jesus defines it clearly: eternal life is knowing the Father and knowing Jesus Christ. This isn’t intellectual knowledge or religious information; it’s a real, transforming relationship. When you met Jesus and He became real to you, that’s when eternal life began, not when you die. This changes everything about how we think about missions and evangelism. We’re not just trying to get people into heaven someday; we’re inviting them into a relationship with the living God today.
Consider the people in the 1040 Window (Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists) who will go their entire lives without ever hearing a clear presentation of who Jesus is. They’re living in spiritual death, separated from the only source of true life. But here’s the beautiful truth: Jesus has authority over all flesh, and He’s actively drawing people to Himself even in the hardest places. Your prayers matter. When you pray for someone in Iran or India or Indonesia to know God personally, you’re partnering with Jesus in His mission to give eternal life. And this same truth applies to your neighbor, your coworker, your family member who doesn’t yet know Him. The greatest gift you can give anyone is helping them know God through Jesus Christ.
Reflect:
- How has knowing God personally (not just knowing about Him) changed your life?
- Who in your life needs to hear that they can have a personal relationship with God through Jesus?
- Pray specifically for someone you know who doesn’t yet have a personal relationship with Jesus, and for an unreached people group to encounter Him.
