“I have manifested your name to the men whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours and you gave them to me and they have kept your word. Now they have come to know that everything you have given me is from you. For the words which you gave me I have given to them, and they received them and truly understood that I came forth from you, and they believe that you sent me.” John 17:6-8

What if God looks at you differently than you look at yourself? On the night before Jesus went to the cross, surrounded by disciples who would soon deny and betray Him, He lifted His eyes to heaven and said something stunning: “They have kept your word.” Not “they’ve messed up constantly” or “they’re barely hanging on.” He focused on what they had kept, not what they had failed at. We spend so much time replaying our failures, wishing for do-overs in parenting, marriage, or ministry. But God is looking at the faith, not just the failure. He sees the ways you’re following Him, the small steps of obedience, the moments you chose His word over your own way.

This is faith over failure. Like the heroes in Hebrews 11 who were messy and broken but remembered for their faith, you are seen by God for the ways you’re keeping His word today. Maybe you’ve been more patient with your kids this week. Maybe you chose to forgive when bitterness felt easier. Maybe you opened your Bible when you wanted to scroll your phone. Those moments matter to Jesus. He’s not keeping a record of your wrongs because those were nailed to the cross. He’s celebrating the ways you’re becoming more like Him. Let that truth settle into your heart today.

Reflect:

  • What failures have you been replaying that God has already covered at the cross?
  • In what specific ways have you “kept His word” recently that you haven’t acknowledged?
  • Thank God for seeing your faith over your failures. Ask Him to help you see yourself the way He sees you, and to give you courage to keep following Him one step at a time.
