Family Devotional: 1 Thessalonians 1:6-10
Opening Prayer
Dear God, thank you for bringing our family together today. Help us learn what it means to have real faith in Jesus—faith that changes us, faith that shows others who You are, and faith that makes a difference in the world. Speak to each of our hearts today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

1 Thessalonians 1:6-10
“You also became imitators of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much tribulation with the joy of the Holy Spirit, so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For the word of the Lord has sounded forth from you, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith toward God has gone forth, so that we have no need to say anything. For they themselves report about us what kind of reception we had with you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve a living and true God, and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, that is Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath to come.”
Family Discussion
The Story
Paul planted a church in Thessalonica and had to leave after only three weekends because people didn’t like that he was preaching about Jesus as King. But even though the new believers faced persecution and hard times, their faith was so strong that word about them spread everywhere! They didn’t just believe in Jesus, they lived like they believed in Jesus.
Discussion for Younger Children
- What does it mean to “imitate” someone? (Let them share examples—maybe they imitate a superhero or parent)
- Just like you might copy someone you look up to, we can copy Jesus by being kind, loving, and helpful!
- The Thessalonians had joy even when things were hard. Can you think of a time you were happy even when something was difficult?
- Talk about how God’s joy is different—it’s deep inside us because we know Jesus loves us no matter what.
- If someone watched you this week, what would they learn about Jesus?
- Help them think of specific ways: sharing with siblings, being kind at school, praying before meals.
Discussion for Older Children
- What’s the difference between borrowed faith (believing because your parents do) and real faith (believing for yourself)?
- Be honest: Have you truly received Jesus for yourself, or are you just going through the motions?
- What would help you make your faith your own?
- The sermon mentioned having “joy in tribulation.” What hard things are you facing right now?
- How can knowing Jesus help you face those things?
- What does it look like to have joy even when life is difficult?
- Who are you imitating? Who is watching and imitating you?
- Talk about role models—both good and bad influences
- Discuss younger siblings, friends, or classmates who might be watching
Discussion for Teens
- Conversion: Have you truly turned from sin and trusted in Jesus?
- Not just “prayed a prayer” once, but genuinely recognized your need for a Savior?
- If you’re not sure, what’s holding you back from making that decision?
- If you have, when was the last time you reflected on what Jesus saved you from?
- Anticipation: Are you in love with Jesus?
- The sermon compared it to a dog waiting for his master to come home. Do you long for Jesus like that?
- What competes for your affection—social media, relationships, achievement, comfort?
- How can you cultivate a deeper love for Christ?
- Celebration: Do you have both tribulation AND joy?
- What tribulations are you facing? (Be specific—social pressure, mental health struggles, family issues, doubts)
- Are you trying to eliminate all hardship, or are you learning to have joy in the midst of it?
- Imitation: Whose example are you following?
- Who are the people in your life demonstrating real faith? How can you learn from them?
- Who might be watching you? Younger siblings? Friends? Teammates?
- Impact: Is your faith resounding?
- The sermon said this generation is making an impact (Jesus Run Club, wearing Christian shirts, baptizing friends). Are you part of that?
- If not, what’s holding you back—fear, apathy, distraction?
- What’s one concrete way you could let your faith “echo” this week?
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you that our faith doesn’t have to be perfect—it just has to be real. Help us receive You deeply into our hearts. Help us reflect You in everything we do and say. And help our faith resound like an echo, so that others see You in us. We know we deserve judgment because of our sin, but thank You for rescuing us through Your life, death, and resurrection. Help us live like people who have been rescued. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
