In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock at night. And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood near them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. And so the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. (Luke 2:8-11)
What is your response when you hear really good news? Some of us will jump, squeal, or make some kind of outward expression to show our excitement. Others will ponder over and over in our minds all the reasons why this is great news. Still others may hear the good news and be encouraged for the moment but let the excitement quickly pass as we hear about the next thing.
In this passage, there was a disruption to the regular rhythm of life for the shepherds. They were not regularly visited by angels or told great messages. They were simple men entrusted with the small flocks they cared for day and night. But this news wasn’t for them only, it was good news for all people. It was good news that needed to be shared. Today, we have been given this same message, this same good news of great joy for all people. Like the shepherds, this good news is not just for us to receive but given to us so we can share with others. There are still people who need to know this good news. There are still people who have not tasted this great joy. Regardless of how you normally respond to good news, this news is greater and evokes a reminder that there is a hope and joy for us to take part in sharing this news with all people in the hope that they will come to know Christ.
- What are some ways you have been reminded of the joy of Christ this Advent season? Who is someone you can share that testimony with?
- Who is someone who is without joy around you? What is going on in their lives? What are some ways you can share the joy of Christ with them?
- Pray for the people that you know need to know the joy of Christ. Ask God to show you how you can share this good news with them.
