Family Table Weekly Devo: Overcoming Obstacles

Based on Nehemiah 4 and the Sermon “Overcoming Obstacles”

For Toddlers – Kinder

Big Idea

God helps us keep going, even when things are hard.

Bible Story Moment

Nehemiah and his friends were building a big wall for God. Some people tried to stop them and said mean things. But Nehemiah prayed to God and kept working!

Read Together:

(Parents can paraphrase Nehemiah 4:6)
“So we built the wall, and the people worked hard because they wanted to help!”

Family Conversation Starters

  • What is something hard you tried to do? Did you want to quit?
  • Who can help you when you feel like giving up?
  • How did Nehemiah talk to God when things were tough?

Prayer

“Dear God, thank you for helping us when things are hard. Help us to keep going and trust you. Amen.”

All-Week Table Talk

  • Share about a time today when something was hard. Did you ask God for help, or did someone encourage you?
  • Let’s take turns saying something nice to each other, like Nehemiah encouraged his friends!

For 1st – 5th Grade

Big Idea

When we face obstacles or people try to stop us from doing what God asks, we can pray, adjust, and keep trusting God—just like Nehemiah.

Bible Story Moment

Read Nehemiah 4:1-6, 14-15 (or choose a few verses to read aloud):
Nehemiah and God’s people were rebuilding Jerusalem’s wall. Enemies mocked them, tried to scare them, and even planned to attack. But Nehemiah prayed, made wise changes, and reminded everyone: “Don’t be afraid. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome!”

Family Conversation Starters

  • What are some obstacles you’ve faced at school, with friends, or in our family?
  • How did Nehemiah respond when things got tough? (He prayed, made adjustments, encouraged others, and trusted God.)
  • Why do you think Nehemiah didn’t quit, even when it was scary?
  • What does it mean for us to put on the “armor of God” when we feel like giving up? (Ephesians 6:10-18)

Prayer

“God, thank you that you fight for us and help us when we face hard things. Please give us courage and help us remember to pray and trust you, just like Nehemiah. Amen.”

All-Week Table Talk

  • Each night, share: Where did you see something hard today? How did you handle it?
  • Who can we encourage this week, like Nehemiah encouraged his friends?
  • Let’s memorize this together: “Our God will fight for us.” (Nehemiah 4:20b)
  • What “adjustments” might we need to make in our family when things get tough?
