This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.
One of the first lessons in a journalism class is how to read and understand the perspective of the person who wrote the article. Understanding an author’s background and expertise can help you see why the writer may tell a story in a certain way or what biases he or she may have. In life, we only see completely through one perspective—our own. We have a special perspective to bring from our individual experience, but we also have blind spots and limits in our point of view. These limits are often something we complain to God about, but they do an important work of reminding us of our place.
Think about this reality: God is light. Only God truly is limitless, and only He has no darkness. Everything in His perspective comes from complete clarity. He sees all people, and He sees the individual; He sees the grand scope of time and everything going on in this very moment. He is the light.
The second part of John’s message is also key: “in Him there is no darkness at all.” Jesus charged His disciples to “Remain in Me, and I in you. . . . the one who remains in Me, and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:4-5). When we follow Christ by faith, we abide in Him and we’re “in” God. God promises that in Him, we can receive His light in our darkness. He grants us His discernment and wisdom as walk in Him. Seek His wisdom, His Truth, and His Light in all matters of life, knowing that only in Him is there true clarity.
- When was a time you were discouraged by your limits? Why?
- How have you seen things more clearly because you’ve sought God’s perspective?
- Pray and ask for His wisdom in a pressing matter in your life.
