“The Lord did not make you His beloved nor choose you because you were greater in number than any of the peoples, since you were the fewest of all peoples, but because the Lord loved you and kept the oath which He swore to your forefathers, the Lord brought you out by a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.”
When searching for a new job, there are a few things you will likely do. You will compile a resume with all the work and education history that makes you qualified for the job you are pursuing. You may answer some initial questions to explain why you would be a good fit for the job, and then in the interview, you do your best to further emphasize your qualifications. In most areas of life, including job interviews, we want to leave a good impression, showing others that we are qualified or respectable. What is amazing about God’s love is that He does not choose us based on who is “deserving” or the “greatest” in terms of worldly qualifications.
Our heavenly Father loves us, even though we are undeserving. He chose the people of Israel because of His own faithfulness, even when the people didn’t deserve it and didn’t have any of their own credentials. He loved them because of the groundwork He had already laid and the work He was doing, not their own accolades. When we come to God, we do not need to come with a list of our credentials or the reasons we are worthy of His love. We don’t apply and interview for God’s love. God will continue to be faithful to the work He is doing in our lives even when we get off track. God’s faithful love endures. Paul spoke of this in 2 Corinthians 12:9: “And He has said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.’ Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.” Let that also be the testimony we embrace in our weakness: that Christ may be magnified in His faithfulness.
- When have you experienced God’s love but knew you were undeserving?
- What are some weaknesses you are wrestling with today?
- Pray and talk to God about the weaknesses you wrestle with, thank Him for loving you even in your weakness, and ask Him to remind you of His power at work in your weaknesses.
