On that day the Lord exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel, so that they revered him, just as they had revered Moses all the days of his life.
Leaders have a special place in the church and our lives. We listen to their teaching, and we see the testimonies of their lives. We learn from them in a special way. The role of a pastor is not to point people to themselves as the answer but constantly show others Christ as the true answer. Joshua was respected as a leader not because he had the best strategy, plans, or desirable outcome. The people respected and revered him because he pointed them to God; he was simply the mouthpiece for God’s instruction. This is what happened with Moses as well. While these men experienced times of sin and difficulty as all humans do, their overall aim was to follow God’s instruction and live His way. That was the legacy they left.
What would it look like to follow God so closely that it was evident to everyone around you? What plans would you set aside? What would you make a priority? The best way we can set an example for the next generation is to follow Jesus in all areas of life. The difference will be evident. Colossians 3:12-13 gives some insight into what this will look like: “So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so must you do also.” Joshua made a name for himself as a man that feared God and followed His path. What legacy are you building?
- What areas of your life point to Jesus? What areas do not?
- How would your life change if you made following Jesus the priority in your life?
- Pray and repent for times you’ve put other things before your relationship with Jesus.
