So then, be careful how you walk, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil.

When watching the news, it doesn’t take long to see or hear evidence of the evil and brokenness in the world. As followers of Christ, our hearts break when we see the pain and difficulty that points back to the fall. When we hit these moments of frustration, inevitably we ask the question, “What do I do?” Scripture speaks on what do in these times. Paul encouraged the church in the evil days they faced to live out their faith. He encouraged them instead of worrying about all the things that were out of their control to be faithful to Christ in their own walks. He exhorted them to make the most of the days, loving and sharing the hope of Christ even as they lived in the fallen world.

The news only gives us a small picture about the things going on in the world. It does not tell us how our neighbors are doing, how our coworker is looking for community, or our how our child is looking for attention. We are to lift our worries up to the Lord about the state of our world while also seeking to love and serve others as the hands and feet of Jesus. We live with hope that goes beyond this life. We can understand that the days are evil and use that understanding not to live in fear but as a reason to share the hope we have with others. Second Corinthians 5:6-9 says “Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord— for we walk by faith, not by sight— but we are of good courage and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord. Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him.” By the grace of God, we can make the most of our days, living lives that please Him and give glory to His name.

  • How do you respond when you see the evil in the world?
  • What would it look like for you to make the most of your time for Christ?
  • Pray and ask God to open your eyes to ways to make the most of your time as you live for Him.
