“Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 5:23)
Sanctification is the beautiful, lifelong process of becoming more and more like Jesus. When you first trusted in Christ, you were immediately made right with God, justified and forgiven. But you didn’t instantly stop struggling with sin or become perfect. Sanctification is God’s work in you over time, shaping your character, transforming your desires, and renewing your mind. This is God’s will for your life, not necessarily which job to take or where to live, but who you’re becoming. He cares far more about the condition of your heart than your circumstances.
The good news in this verse is that God Himself does this work in you. You’re not left to pull yourself up by your bootstraps or try harder in your own strength. Through the Holy Spirit, through community with other believers, through Scripture and prayer, God is actively working to sanctify you completely. Your part is to stay open and engaged, to lift up leaders who challenge you, to patiently care for others which stretches you, to press into God continuously, and to yield to the Spirit’s work. As you do, you’ll notice change. Not perfection, but progress. Not instant transformation, but steady growth. Trust that the God who began this good work in you will be faithful to complete it.
Reflect:
- In what areas of my life do I see evidence that God is sanctifying me and helping me grow?
- How can I cooperate more fully with what God is doing to make me more like Jesus?
- Thank God for the work He’s doing in you and ask Him to continue sanctifying you completely in spirit, soul, and body.
