“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.” (Psalm 127:1-2)
Everything we do without the Lord is empty. You can work 80-hour weeks, climb the corporate ladder, provide every material comfort your family could want, and still build in vain if Jesus isn’t the center. This passage isn’t saying don’t work hard. It’s saying make sure your work, your plans, your entire household is built on the right foundation. When God is at the center of your home, your marriage, your parenting, and your work, everything else falls into proper perspective.
Here’s the beautiful promise tucked into this passage: God gives His beloved sleep. When you’re laboring in your own strength, anxiety follows. But when you surrender control and build your house on the Lord, He provides rest. This Father’s Day and every day after, make Jesus the center. Let Him be the foundation of every decision, every conversation, every plan. Stop trying to build in your own strength and invite the Master Builder to do what only He can do. Your role is obedience and faithfulness. The outcome is His to handle. Trust Him with your family, and watch Him do immeasurably more than you could ask or imagine.
Reflect:
- What areas of your life are you trying to build in your own strength instead of surrendering to God?
- How can you make Jesus more central in your household starting this week?
- Surrender your plans, your family, and your future to God, asking Him to be the foundation and builder of your house.
