“And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” — Matthew 28:20 (ESV)
These are the last words Jesus spoke to His disciples before ascending to heaven, and they’re the words that make everything else possible. Jesus had just given them an impossible mission: go make disciples of all nations. Teach them everything I’ve taught you. Baptize them. It’s overwhelming when you think about it. How could a small group of ordinary people possibly accomplish something so massive? But Jesus doesn’t leave them (or us) with just a command. He leaves them with a promise: “I am with you always.”
The sermon emphasized that this isn’t just a nice sentiment, it’s the power source for the mission. You’re not going into your school, your workplace, your neighborhood, or the nations alone. The One who has all authority in heaven and on earth is with you. The One who is the Bread of Life, the Light of the World, the Good Shepherd, and the True Vine, He’s with you. Always. Not just on the good days or when you feel spiritual, but even to the end of the age. When you’re afraid to share your faith, He’s with you. When you feel inadequatefor the mission, He’s with you. When you’re lonely, confused, or walking through darkness, He’s with you. This promise transforms everything. You can be bold because you’re not alone. You can step into the mission because the One who sends you goes with you. And one day, when this age ends, you’ll be with Him face to face for all eternity. The presence that sustains you now will be your joy forever.
Reflect:
- How would you live differently today if you truly believed Jesus is with you in every moment and every situation?
- What specific mission or step of obedience has God been calling you to that you’ve been afraid to take? How does His promise to be with you always change your response?
- Thank Jesus for His promise to never leave you or forsake you. Ask Him for the courage to step into whatever mission He’s calling you to, trusting that His presence is all you need.
