“And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has the life… These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.” (1 John 5:11-13, NASB)
The foundation for loving God and loving neighbor is not our own effort, but God’s mercy toward us in Christ. The sermon reminded us that salvation is not something we achieve, but something we receive—a gift of grace through faith in Jesus. Because God has caused us to be born again to a living hope, we are set free to love without fear and to serve without calculation. Our hope is anchored not in ourselves, but in the resurrection of Jesus and the promise of eternal life.
This assurance changes everything. We do not serve or show mercy to earn God’s favor; we do so because we have already received it. The confidence that comes from knowing we have eternal life in Christ empowers us to live generously, to forgive freely, and to take risks in loving others well. Our lives become a testimony to the hope we have, inviting others to discover the source of true life. The call to go beyond what is expected is rooted in the abundance of what God has already done for us.
As you close this week, rest in the certainty of God’s mercy and the hope of eternal life. How does knowing you are secure in Christ free you to love boldly and sacrificially? Who might God be prompting you to share this hope with? In what ways does your life reflect the joy and security that come from being “born again to a living hope”?
- How does the assurance of eternal life shape your daily choices and relationships?
- What would change if you lived every day as someone deeply loved, forgiven, and secure in Christ?
- Ask God to fill your heart with joy and security, overflowing in love for your neighbor.
