For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead. James 2:26

Teenagers are not always the most cooperative people. An eyeroll, sigh, or whine of, “Do I have to?” often communicate their attitude toward a given task. Your request may get done but may be accompanied by resistance. In our flesh, it is challenging to appreciate the value of listening to others’ advice or instruction, even when it is good. If we are not careful, we will respond to God like a resentful child, whether inwardly or outwardly.

James summed up his previous teaching on faith and works with this concise statement. This call to live out faith through works isn’t a suggestion or reserved for super Christians; it is essential to true faith. Faith is practiced and reflected through action. Faith without substance is not authentic but is in fact dead.

We were made in God’s image, for a relationship with Him, to trust Him as our Creator, and for a purpose for His glory and our good. When we try to take the easy way out or resist God’s call, we ultimately miss out on His good design for us and the beauty of life with Him.

  • What are some ways you have resisted living out your faith? What do you find most difficult to live faithfully for God?
  • What benefits have you experienced from living in God’s way?
  • Pray and ask God to show you how you can live out your faith in new ways.
