Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving.
How many people do you see in a day? Many of us could not count, even if we tried, because we pass so many people without even noticing. We spend so much of our days on our way from one place to another or busy with various tasks that it is easy to miss the people in the moments in between. Paul’s words remind us that the call of Christ is not to a passive faith but an active one and to an awareness of the people around us.
Continuing earnestly in prayer is our opportunity to communicate with God and talk to Him throughout our day. It is a way we stay vigilant, aware of our surroundings and who the Lord may have us speak to. Prayer is the invitation to ask God to intercede in our lives whether we are having a moment of struggle or waiting in the line at the grocery store. It is the way we acknowledge He is always at work in the world. When we continue earnestly in prayer, our eyes are opened not only to the things we must do in a day but also to the people alongside us on the journey. We start to notice others and ask God how He wants to use us to minister to them.
Imagine the impact we could make in the world if we started to see God is the One we call on in times of trouble and the One we partner with as we recognize the ways He is at work in the world and how we can join Him.
- What are some things you do every day? Who are some people you consistently see (or maybe overlook) as you do those tasks?
- What steps could you take to be intentional with these people in a God-honoring way?
- Pray and ask God to open your eyes to opportunities to share with others during your everyday routines.
