“Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.'” — John 6:35 (ESV)

When Jesus declares “I am the bread of life,” He’s making an audacious claim about being our complete sustenance. Just as bread was the staple food in ancient times, the thing people depended on daily for survival. Jesus is saying He’s the one thing we truly need to be sustained. Think about how often we try to fill ourselves with other things: achievements, relationships, entertainment, approval from others. We’re constantly hungry, constantly searching for the next thing that will satisfy us. But Jesus is saying, “I’m it. I’m what you’ve been looking for.”

The beauty of this promise is that it’s not just about eternal life, it’s about today. Right now, in the middle of your Monday or your crisis or your boredom, Jesus offers to be your sustenance. When you feel empty, when you’re running on fumes, when you’re trying to manufacture joy or peace or purpose on your own, that’s when you need to come back to the Bread of Life. The sermon this week reminded us that Jesus is with us always, and part of that presence is His provision. He doesn’t just walk alongside us; He nourishes us. The question isn’t whether He’s enough, it’s whether we’ll stop trying to fill ourselves with everything else and actually come to Him.

Reflect:

  • What are you currently trying to use to “fill” yourself instead of coming to Jesus?
  • How would your day look different if you truly believed Jesus is all the sustenance you need
  • Ask God to reveal the things you’re using as substitutes for Him, and ask Him to increase your hunger for His presence above everything else.
