You shall have no other gods before Me.
As we grow busier in life or just a given season, our priorities become defined. The most pressing or important items move to the top of our list and those that can wait for another day move to the bottom. When we consider this command, we should recognize this doesn’t mean only putting God at the top of our priority list. He is to have the place of full authority in our life. He is not just first on the list—He is to be the lens through which we see and consider everything else.
Matthew 6:31-33 says, “Do not worry then, saying, ‘What are we to eat?’ or ‘What are we to drink?’ or ‘What are we to wear for clothing?’ For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided to you.” It is easy to get caught up in the needs and demands of each day but as followers of Christ, we have a calling to seek first His kingdom. Even in the chaos of struggles and busy schedules, we need to let God rule over our whole lives and seek His kingdom in everything.
Otherwise, we will put things before Him. We can trust Him as Lord over our lives even when it’s difficult because He knows our every need. In His hands, the small things are taken care of, and we are given everything we need. We can trust that life is best when He is in His place as God, and we seek Him above all else.
- What place has God had in your life recently? What is positive about that? What needs to change?
- What does it look like to let God be Lord over all of life and seek first His kingdom?
- Pray and surrender to God, asking Him to be Lord of your whole life.
