“You also became imitators of us and of the Lord, having received the Word in much tribulation with the joy of the Holy Spirit.” (1 Thessalonians 1:6)
Real faith starts with truly receiving the gospel, not just hearing it. The Thessalonians didn’t grow up in church. They didn’t have years of Bible studies or perfect Sunday school attendance. But when they encountered Jesus, something radical happened. They welcomed the Word deeply into their hearts, and it changed everything. This wasn’t a shallow acceptance or going through the motions because their parents told them to. It was a deep, transformative reception of who Jesus is and what He’s done. That’s the kind of faith that lasts, the kind that carries you through every season of life.
Here’s the beautiful paradox: they received this Word in the midst of tribulation, yet they experienced joy. In our culture, we think we can’t have joy unless we eliminate all our problems first. But real faith holds both at the same time. You can face persecution, difficulty, and hardship while simultaneously experiencing the deep, unshakeable joy of the Holy Spirit. The question for us today is simple but profound: Have you truly received the gospel? Is your faith your own, or are you still running on borrowed faith from your parents or your church community? Real conversion means turning from what you know is wrong and embracing Jesus as the one true living God. That’s where lasting faith begins.
Reflect:
- When did you first truly receive the gospel for yourself, not just as something you heard but as something that transformed your life?
- Are there areas where you’re still going through the motions of faith rather than living from a deeply received gospel?
- Ask God to show you if your faith is truly your own, and pray for a deeper reception of the gospel that transforms every area of your life.
