So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Who do you share a lot in common with? Who do you not relate with at all? There are some people we naturally connect with and value. From our first conversation, we share a lot in common. But sometimes our experience is the opposite. When we are from different backgrounds, have different abilities, or speak different languages, it can be hard to relate with one another. Today’s passage reminds us that we all share the same foundation. We hold the most important thing in common even when it doesn’t feel that way.

The question becomes how do we treat people in a way that reflects this foundational truth? How can we remind ourselves of this thing we have in common even when we are confronted with our differences? How can we treat all people with the value and dignity of being an image bearer of God? Each of us are created in the image of God and made to reflect Him. Through Christ, this is possible in the way we relate with others and love them as He does. By living this way, we not only bring God glory, but we also live as we are intended, reflecting the Creator of heaven and earth.

  • How do you typically respond when you encounter someone you don’t share a lot in common with?
  • Who is a person or group of people you need to be reminded are image bearers—people with inherent value and dignity as God’s good creation?
  • Pray and ask God to help you love others even when you don’t feel like you have a lot in common.
