“He told them, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.'” (Luke 10:2)
Jesus’ words in Luke 10:2 are a call to see the world with spiritual eyes. The “harvest” represents all the people ready to hear and experience God’s love, but Jesus says there aren’t enough people willing to go and share. Instead of first telling his followers to get busy, he tells them to pray—to ask God to send workers. This shows us that God’s mission begins with prayerful dependence, not just human energy or strategy. When we pray for the harvest, we begin to see people the way God does: precious, valuable, and in need of hope. Prayer is the starting point for every true movement of God.
Many times, we look at our own neighborhoods, schools, or workplaces and wonder who will reach those who don’t know Jesus. Jesus’ words remind us that the need is great, and so is the opportunity. But he also gently pushes us to realize that we ourselves are often the answer to our own prayers. As we pray for God to send workers, He often calls us to go as well. This posture of prayer keeps us humble and open, relying on God for direction and courage as we step into His harvest.
Begin this week by asking God to open your eyes to those around you who need His love and truth. Pray for more workers—not just somewhere else in the world, but right where you are. Ask God to give you courage to step forward, knowing that you don’t go alone. When you pray, be willing to listen for how God might want to use you as part of the answer. Trust that He is already at work in the hearts of those He sends you to.
Reflection Questions:
- Who in your life might be part of God’s “harvest field” right now?
- How does praying for workers change your own willingness to be sent?
- What does it look like to trust God with both the need and the response?
