Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom. – James 3:13
Have you ever had someone yell at you to get their point across or gone back and forth on a comment thread to argue the facts in an attempt to change another person’s mind? This approach comes naturally when we are passionate about a cause, but it is rarely effective in sharing wisdom. James not only encouraged his readers to share wisdom but also gave instructions about how to do it. Wisdom is most effectively shared not through an argument or passionate words but through deeds that reflect the words of wisdom. While our fleshly nature fixates on proving our point, our Christlike call is to exemplify the truth of Scripture with gentleness, rather than insisting on our way.
Practicing gentleness is challenging. We worry that our point won’t be heard, or our emotions are so high that they threaten to take over our behavior. Whatever our struggle, the call to share wisdom in a Christlike way is the same. This often means surrendering the outcome to God or being honest with Him about our frustration and impatience with others. Through Christ, we can not only use wise words but live with wisdom that glorifies Him.
- What are some ways you have tried to share wisdom with others? Which methods were effective? Which were not?
- When are you least likely to be gentle with others? What are the things that get you most frustrated or animated in conversation?
- Pray and ask God to help you find not only wise words to say but also to show you how to live with wisdom with others.
