But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. So Jesus said to them, “Children, you do not have any fish to eat, do you?” They answered Him, “No.” And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you will find the fish.” So they cast it, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great quantity of fish. Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea.
Anyone who lives long enough will encounter moments that act as “turning points.” We can remember where we were and what we were doing when we things changed. We often reflect on those moments to consider the change that has taken place. Peter and the other disciples had a memorable moment like this early in Jesus’s ministry when they were fishing and Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of people” (Matthew 4:19). Immediately they dropped their nets and followed Him, and their lives were never the same. After all the amazing and hard things that happened after that point, the resurrected Jesus reenacted this moment with them. This interaction reminded them of His authority and the moment that changed everything when He first called them to be fishers of men.
Jesus reminded the disciples that His calling had not changed. We need that same reminder. You may have been living out your faith for a long time or stuck in the rut of going through the motions of your faith, forgetting the purpose in it. After all you have been through and the events that have happened since you first believed, your calling has not changed. The same Jesus who rose again and changed everything for you in the past is still ready to work and move in your life today.
- What was a major turning point in your faith? What did you learn in that time?
- What circumstances in your life are different from when you first believed? Do those things make it easier or more difficult for you to live faithfully and share with others?
- Pray for your brothers and sisters in Christ that are struggling and have forgotten their calling.
