You yourselves also know, Philippians, that at the first preaching of the gospel, after I left Macedonia, no church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving except you alone; for even in Thessalonica you sent a gift more than once for my needs.

Those who offer us help often hold a special place in our hearts. Even long after the moment, their impact stays with us. People like our parents, teachers, friends, or mentors shape us by taking time to help us when it is needed. Paul was also formed by the help of others. Here he said out of all the churches he served, only the Philippians sent him aid, even across great distances. They helped him, not because it was easy or convenient but because of their love for Christ and for Paul and his ministry.

Sometimes, a moment of helping feels small. We don’t know how our financial contribution, volunteer hours, or even prayer can practically make a difference but the measure for the effectiveness of our help is not in our hands. We are simply called to be obedient; God will bring about effectiveness. Your part may feel small, but we can trust God to take the little bit that we can do and make eternal impacts for His glory. God has called you to join in His work. It’s time to take a step and serve in obedience, even when it feels inconsequential.

  • When have you struggled with wondering if you were making a difference?
  • Who are some people who have helped you but may not know the impact they made? Why was their help so meaningful to you?
  • Pray and thank God for those in faith who have impacted you. Reach out to them and encourage them this week.
