[Christ Jesus], as He already existed in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself by taking the form of a bond-servant and being born in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death: death on a cross.
Role models have a powerful place in our lives. Their lives influence us, and we strive to be like them. We learn from how they live and what they do, seeking to make our habits reflect theirs. Humility is not a natural way to live, and even our Christian examples fall short sometimes. When Paul gave this exhortation toward humility, he pointed us to the perfect role model: Jesus. Instead of holding on to His position as the Son of God, Jesus humbled Himself by coming in the form of a man (fully God, fully man). He humbly served people but always obeyed God the Father. He took time to be with God in solitude, listened to God for what to speak, and obeyed even to the point of suffering and death. Jesus’s life was more than a string of humble acts; it was the perfect example of humility. He perfectly submitted to God in every area.
We naturally desire comfort, ease, and convenience in life. Jesus reminds us that humility is only possible through walking with God. As we walk with God, the Holy Spirit equips us to live in humility before God and others.
- What are some of the comforts and conveniences you enjoy? When are you tempted to put your own interests ahead of others?
- How are you seeking to live like Jesus daily? Who are some other role models you have? Do they reflect the model of Jesus?
- Pray and thank God for giving Jesus as our perfect example of humility.
