For the kingdom is the Lord’s and He rules over the nations.
What are some things that feel out of control in the world today? What are some issues in the world that really make you angry or sad? It does not take long to see the brokenness in our world today. With quick and constant access to news around the world, it’s easy to get caught in a tailspin of hopelessness. But as Christ followers, we have a hope that is unique, real, and accessible for today. Our hope goes beyond knowing heaven awaits us someday or even that Jesus will return and make all things right. Our hope also reaches the present moment. We have hope because God is in charge and in control at this very moment, even in the things that seem so hopelessly beyond redemption. Because He is writing a beautiful redemption story even with the messy pieces of history.
God sees what is happening. He is not ignoring it. He is not distant. He is not blindsided by current events. Our great God was in control long before we were born; He is in control even now; and He has assured us that a new heaven waits for those who trust in Him, where everything will be completely restored.
May we hold onto the truth of 2 Peter 3:8-9, which helps us hold onto the hope and sovereignty of our Lord: “But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not willing for any to perish, but for all to come to repentance.”
- When does it feel like problems in the world are out of God’s control?
- How can hope in God’s sovereignty change the way you react to current events?
- Pray for Christians all over the world to remember their hope of God’s sovereignty in this world.
