“For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'” (Galations 5:13-14)
The gospel brings true freedom—freedom from sin, from fear, and from self-centeredness. But Paul warns that Christian freedom is not a license for selfishness; it is an invitation to love. Serving others is the natural overflow of a heart set free by Christ. When we use our freedom to bless and care for others, we fulfill the heart of God’s law: loving our neighbor as ourselves. Service becomes not a burden, but a joyful expression of our new identity in Christ.
As we serve, we discover the paradox that giving ourselves away is where we find real fulfillment. Selfishness leads to emptiness, but loving service leads to life and connection. Think about the people in your path this week—your family, friends, coworkers, or even strangers. Where can your freedom be used for someone else’s good? Look for small, practical ways to serve, knowing that love is the true measure of your faith.
- In what ways have you used your freedom for yourself instead of others?
- Who is your “neighbor” this week, and how can you serve them with love?
- Thank God for the freedom you have in Christ. Ask Him to help you use that freedom to serve and love those around you, reflecting His heart to the world.
