“…joined with their brothers… and entered into a curse and an oath to walk in God’s Law… and to observe and do all the commandments of the Lord.” (Nehemiah 10:29)

The commitment found in Nehemiah 10 meant separating themselves from the idols and practices of surrounding nations, while staying present in their city and world. The sermon stressed that God’s people are called to be distinct—not strange or removed, but marked by different values, priorities, and love.

The Israelites’ distinctiveness was seen in their worship, their care for one another, their Sabbath rhythms, and their generosity. Their lives pointed to the truth and beauty of God in a way that invited questions from others. As the sermon noted, Christians are meant to look different—not because of self-righteousness, but because of Christ’s love shaping how we live, serve, and relate to others. True holiness means being set apart for God while remaining engaged with those who do not yet know Him.

The more we are formed by God’s Word and Spirit, the more our actions will reflect His character. Distinctiveness is not about isolation, but about influence. God calls us to be “in the world but not of it”—to be light in the darkness, hope in the brokenness, and love in the midst of indifference.
