Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of the whole earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of the whole earth.” (Genesis 11:9)

The Tower of Babel seems like a story of judgment, but look closer—it’s actually a story of God’s relentless pursuit of His original plan. When humanity gathered to make a name for themselves rather than spreading out to fill the earth as God commanded, He scattered them. But this scattering wasn’t the end of the story. It was the beginning of God’s plan to gather worshipers from every language, every people group, every nation. What looked like division was actually the setup for the most beautiful reunion in history.

Here’s the stunning truth: God is still in the gathering business. Every nation that exists today, every language spoken, every cultural distinction—God is working through all of it to bring people back to Himself. The same selfish ambition that drove people at Babel still lives in our hearts today. We want to make a name for ourselves, build our own kingdoms, stay comfortable in our own communities. But God is inviting us into something so much bigger—to be part of His plan to gather what was scattered, to see His name made great among the nations.

Reflect:

  • In what ways are you tempted to “build your own tower”—to focus on making your own name great rather than God’s name known?
  • How might God be calling you to move beyond your comfortable community to be part of His gathering work?
  • Confess the ways you’ve prioritized your own name and comfort over God’s glory, and ask Him to give you a heart that longs to see His name made great among all peoples.
