“Therefore, come now and I will send you to Pharaoh so that you may bring my people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt.” – Exodus 3:10
Moses had every reason to say no. He had a speech impediment, a criminal past, and was living in self-imposed exile as a shepherd. When God called him to go back to Egypt (the very place tied to his greatest failure and fear), Moses essentially said, “I’m not good enough. I’m just ordinary.” Sound familiar? You can probably relate to Moses more than you’d like to admit. You look at what God is calling you to do and immediately catalog all your inadequacies. But here’s what God was really saying to Moses: “Yes, you’re ordinary, but I AM extraordinary, and I’m going to work through you.”
The beauty of God’s economy is that He specializes in using ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things. He doesn’t need your perfection; He needs your availability. When you feel unqualified for what God is asking you to do, you’re actually in the perfect position for Him to show His power. Moses never made it to the Promised Land himself, but that doesn’t mean God didn’t use him mightily. Sometimes obedience isn’t about seeing the final result; it’s about being faithful in the going. What if the very thing that makes you feel inadequate is exactly what God wants to use to display His strength? Your weakness becomes the canvas for His glory.
Reflect:
- What inadequacies or past failures are you allowing to keep you from saying “yes” to God’s call to go?
- How might your “ordinary” life become the platform for God’s extraordinary purposes if you simply made yourself available?
- Confess to God the areas where you feel inadequate, and ask Him to help you see those weaknesses as opportunities for His strength to be displayed.
