“That they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.” John 17:21

Jesus prays for something remarkable here: that our unity would mirror the unity of the Trinity itself. Think about that for a moment. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit exist in perfect harmony, mutual honor, and selfless love. When we trust in Jesus, we’re brought right into that divine relationship. We’re invited into the very life of God, where love and honor flow continuously. This isn’t just a nice idea; it’s the reality of what happens when Christ lives in us.

But here’s the challenging part: Jesus says this unity has a purpose. It’s “so that the world may believe.” When Christians are divided, attacking each other on social media, fragmenting over secondary issues, we damage our witness. But when we demonstrate genuine unity in Christ, when organizations work together like those Bible translation agencies, when families love each other well on mission trips, the world takes notice. Unity isn’t about agreeing on everything; it’s about being anchored in Christ together. Where might God be calling you to pursue unity today, even when it’s difficult?

Reflect:

  • Are there any relationships in your Christian community that need reconciliation or deeper unity?
  • How does knowing you’re “in the mix” of the Trinity’s love change the way you approach conflicts with other believers?
  • Pray for unity in your church, your small group, or your family. Ask God to help you be a peacemaker who reflects the harmony of the Trinity.
